Overview

Under direction of the Sr. Vice President & Chief Medical Officer, the Chairman of the Department of Medicine will work with the Medical Executive Committee, the Chief of Staff and the Chief Medical Officer. The Chairman of the Department of Medicine provides leadership and oversight to the Department of medicine and its sections, including business meetings, section meetings, Morbidity and Mortality Reviews and development of clinical protocols.

Maintain a role in clinical medicine (0.6 administrative, 0.4 clinical)

Responsibilities

Patient Care – Passionate role model for clinical excellence and patient care.  Drives quality, patient safety and clinical outcomes. 

  • Oversees quality/clinical management to meet patient needs.
  • Participates on committees to improve quality and enhancement of services.
  • Maintains clinical credibility and visibility.
  • Collaborates with Atlantic Health System to share best practices and support continuum of care.
  • Establishes and monitors critical pathways, guidelines and protocols in collaboration with the service lines, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Medical Officer. 

Physician Relations – Acts as liaison between employed/voluntary medical staff and administration. 

  • Represents Department of Internal Medicine’s ideas, recommendations, desires and needs.
  • Promotes collegiality and Physician Quality, communication and adherence to Departmental Rules and Regulations.
  • Assures compliance by the voluntary and employed attending staff with the policy of 24/7 coverage of the hospital for medical services.
  • Oversees the sections within the Department of Medicine, including leadership development, rules and regulations, new and updated policies and procedures.
  • Assist in credentialing of new applicant to the Department and its subsections. 

Patient Experience – Engages and supports patient experience programs and practices.

  • Focuses on HCAHPS scores and improvements, as needed, in cooperation with the Director of Patient Experience. 

Business Development – Develops plans to grow the business, assures program development and acquires required equipment, technologies and facilities.

  • Involved in resource management including people and finances. 

Strategic Planning – Participates in developing and implementing strategic goals

  • Understands and communicates trends in the marketplace.
  • Provides environmental scans in and outside of NJ.
  • Develops a vision for the Department and subsections. 

Talent Management – Manages, develops and motivates staff.

  • Participates in developing reward and recognition programs for physicians and other staff.
  • Oversees performance of medical staff, sets goals, and delivers feedback.
  • Develops scorecard, including data and metrics.
  • Participates in recruitment, retention and development of staff and succession planning. 

Research – Provides research leadership, when applicable.

  • Works with foundation to solicit donations.
  • Oversees marketing of Department.
  • Ensures Department is actively involved in community education and scientific programs.
Qualifications

  • M.D./D.O. required
  • Licensed physician in New Jersey
  • Board Certification
  • Experience as a medical director, medical staff or departmental leadership position preferred
  • Ability to work with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and efficient
