Overview

Under the direction of the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room, and in collaboration with the physician surgical staff, and the
established guidelines, provides support as an RNFA during surgical procedures. The RNFA is a perioperative registered nurse who:
• Works in collaboration with the surgeon and other healthcare team members to achieve optional patient outcomes
• Has acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA defined practice
• Interoperatively practices at the discretion of the surgeon
• Does not concurrently function as a scrub person.

Adheres to AORN standards of practice for RNFA.

Responsibilities

  • Provides considerate respectful care focused upon the patient’s individual needs to ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Affirms the patient’s right to make decisions regarding his/her medical care, including the decision to discontinue treatment, to the
    extent permitted by law.
  • Identifies clinical competencies related to RNFA.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Managers to monitor and evaluate programs/services against identified needs (eg.: number of cases utilizing RNFA vs. number of cases still requiring assistant).
  • Acts as patient advocate. Supports a service that positions the patient at the core of decision-making.
  • Identifies key areas for continuous performance improvement utilizing all available mechanisms.
  • Shows and sustains improvement gains.
  • Supports cost containment through efficient use of equipment, supplies and other pertinent resources.
  • Understands the business and how he/she impacts the overall operations and success of the organization.
  • Supports team work when appropriate by researching and sharing information, cooperatively solving problems and helping out when time permits.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with others effectively within and outside the department.
  • Demonstrates willingness to be flexible with unplanned assignments as necessary.
  • Participates in activities, committees, projects, teams and department staff meetings.
  • Participates in preoperative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers.
  • Performs focused preoperative patient assessments.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare providers regarding plan of care.
  • Intraoperatively performs surgical first assistant techniques: uses instruments and medical devices; provides surgical site exposure, handling and cutting tissue, providing hemostasis suturing wound management as appropriate; may participate in post op rounds and assist with discharge planning and identification of appropriate community needs.
  • Maintains and upgrades own nursing practice and development.
  • Recognizes changes in patient condition and/or emergencies situations and takes immediate and appropriate actions.
  • Makes decisions that demonstrate knowledge of nursing practice; utilizes sound nursing judgment in clinical and patient care management situations.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in the care of patients and in the coordination of care to assure the best patient outcomes.
  • Provides for the protection of self and others by adhering to the unit-based safe work practices regarding protective equipment by using proper sharps disposal technique.
  • Exercises care and caution working with and around other sharps and following manufacturer’s safety precautions.

Qualifications

 

  • BSN Required
  • RN NJ License
  • Completion of an approved program for RNFA. Effective January 1, 2020 the education for entry into an RNFA program and subsequently practice as an RNFA will be the Bachelor’s degree. (AORN action statement)
  • Three years Perioperative experience required.
  • CNOR certification required
  • BLS certification required
  • RNFA certification (RNFAC) and successful completion of exam after required clinical hours for eligibility
  • Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills to effectively relate with all members of the healthcare team
